Dental Cleanings

Making Cleanings a Regular Occurrence

Scheduled dental cleanings remove build-up from your teeth and are crucial for your overall health. Research shows how gum disease is directly linked to cardiovascular health. Regular cleanings also eliminate or reduce the need for more extensive procedures in the future.

Dental Cleaning

At a dental cleaning appointment, our dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums every visit. We can take X-rays (or radiographs) and photos to keep tabs on any trouble spots. Dental cleanings are the most effective method to prevent disease and complications in the future!

Periodontal Disease

Gum diseases, like gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that can lead to tooth loss. If you suffer from bleeding or inflamed gums, it’s time to schedule an appointment. A tooth lost to gum disease is a tooth lost forever.

Mercury-Free Dental Fillings

It may surprise you that silver amalgam fillings have been used in dentistry since the mid-1800s. Dentists would combine mercury and silver to create a paste that hardened and could be used to fill cavities. These fillings, commonly called “silver fillings,” were technically known as amalgam fillings.

Nowadays, you probably have a silver amalgam filling in your mouth. However, it’s essential to note that these fillings contain more mercury than silver. In fact, roughly 50% of the content of an amalgam filling is mercury.

Dr. Coleman: Leading the Way as a "Mercury-Free" Dentist

With advancements in dental technology and techniques, a groundbreaking alternative to amalgam fillings has emerged. White composite fillings have proven to be a highly durable substitute, even for back teeth. Alongside this discovery, bonding technology has also progressed, allowing composite materials to be permanently bonded to teeth.

To ensure the successful placement of composite fillings, it is crucial to isolate the tooth completely, requiring advanced training in bonding techniques. Dr. Coleman has wholeheartedly embraced this newer technology and has become a master in the procedures necessary for the successful placement of composite fillings. As a result, his practice is entirely free of mercury-containing fillings.

The Remarkable Advantages of "Mercury-Free" Fillings

Beyond the undeniable health and safety benefits of white composite fillings, there are numerous other advantages worth considering:

Enhanced Tooth Strength: Unlike traditional amalgam fillings, white composite fillings are bonded directly onto the tooth. This bonding increases the overall strength of the tooth, offering long-lasting durability.
Reduced Post-Operative Sensitivity: Patients frequently report less post-operative sensitivity when opting for composite fillings. This improved comfort contributes to a more pleasant dental experience.
Preservation of Natural Tooth Structure: Amalgam fillings often require the removal of more natural tooth structures during the filling process. Conversely, composite fillings bond to this weaker tooth structure, reinforcing and strengthening it.
Protective Seal: Composite materials form a protective seal around the tooth, shielding it from potential future decay. This added layer of protection helps to maintain optimal oral health.
Corrosion Resistance: Over time, amalgam fillings can corrode, potentially causing further dental complications. In contrast, composite fillings exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, ensuring a longer lifespan for your dental restorations.
Aesthetic Appeal: Along with their functional benefits, composite fillings offer a significant advantage in terms of aesthetics. These fillings are identical to the natural color of your teeth, resulting in a seamless and natural-looking smile.

Benefits of Visiting a Houston Sedation Dentist

There are many benefits to receiving sedation at your dental visit:

  •  You will likely not remember your appointment.
  • Your treatment will be pain-free.
  • Time will pass quickly.
  • Dr. Coleman can accomplish more in one appointment, so you may not require multiple visits.
  • Sedation can be adjusted to meet your individual needs.

Houston's "Mercury-Free" Dentist

Did you know that silver amalgam fillings date back to the mid-1800s? Dentists combined mercury and silver into a paste that hardened and could be used to fill a tooth after they removed decay. The technical term for this type of filling is “amalgam,” commonly called a “silver filling.”

Today, there is a good chance you have a silver amalgam filling on one or more teeth. However, these fillings contain more mercury than silver. Approximately 50% of the content of amalgam is mercury.

Proud to Be a "Mercury-Free" Dentist

As technology and techniques advanced in dentistry, a “mercury-free” option was developed. White composite has proven to be a durable alternative to amalgam fillings, even on back teeth. Concurrent with this discovery, bonding technology has also progressed to enable composite to be permanently bonded to the tooth.

To successfully place composite fillings, the tooth must be completely isolated, which requires advanced training in bonding techniques. Dr. Coleman has embraced this newer technology and has mastered the techniques needed to place composite fillings successfully. His practice is entirely mercury-free.

Enjoy a stronger, more aesthetically pleasing smile that truly reflects your vibrant personality.

Advantages of "Mercury-Free" Fillings

In addition to the health and safety benefits of white composite fillings, there are many other benefits:

  • White fillings are bonded to the tooth, which increases the strength of the tooth.
  • Patients report less post-operative sensitivity with composite fillings.
  • More of the natural tooth structure must be removed with amalgam fillings, whereas composites bond to this weak tooth structure and strengthen it.
  • The composite material forms a seal which helps to protect the tooth from future decay.
  • Over time amalgam fillings can corrode.
  • Composite fillings look much nicer, too. The material is the same tooth color, resulting in a natural look.

I can’t emphasize enough how wonderful Dr. Coleman and his staff are. I have been a patient for many decades, and sometimes it’s easy to become accustomed to great service and forget just how great the experience truly is. I was out of the city for about 9 years, so I do have experience with other dentists. I can say without reservation that Dr. Coleman is passionate about his work, extremely knowledgeable and up to date with the latest in dentistry, and has a great, caring bedside manor. He clearly puts his patients first, and has always been there for me - even after hours. This past year, I needed some major reconstructive cosmetic dental work, and Dr. Coleman truly delivered. He put in the extra time and effort to meet my needs for detail. My smile looks better than it ever has, and the health of my teeth and gums is the best it has been. A doctor is only as good as his assistants, and Lisa and Laurie are always so pleasant, attentive, and caring. The office is clean and comfortable. For all of these reasons, I will continue going to Dr. Coleman for as long as possible and will continue to recommend him to my family, friends, and those in need of a great dentist!
