There is a video that’s been around YouTube for a few years— DIY braces. It’s recently been gaining popularity. I can understand why. Who wouldn’t want to save money doing braces themselves? It’s also popular among young teens who want braces, but have parents who’ve told them they can’t afford them.
The video, seen below, is created by a young girl who figured out a way to give herself braces. She’s open and honest about how it can be a little painful at first. What she doesn’t share is how dangerous it is. Not because she’s being deceptive, but because she is an innocent young girl who doesn’t have years of dental training.
Dentists carefully guide crooked teeth into a new position. It happens in two stages, first moving the teeth, then the accompanying roots need to be osseointegrated in order to support your teeth. When you just tip the teeth, the way the video explains, you don’t necessarily take the tooth roots with them properly. This can lead to weakening, loosening, or even losing your teeth.
There are other dangers too. You could cut off the blood supply in your gums. Even just damaging the blood supply a little could change the color of your teeth. Cutting off a blood supply can not only change the shape of the gums, but lead to inflammation and infection.
If you want braces, but can’t afford them, there are better and safer ways of going about it. The first step, is to talk to your dentist.
